Stay at Bischoff Inn & make the journey part of the experience by boarding the Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad train at Tamaqua Station for a scenic ride to Jim Thorpe. The route travels through rolling farmland, mountain scenery, small towns, tunnels, and bridges—including the memorable Hometown High Bridge—before arriving in one of Pennsylvania’s most picturesque historic towns. It is an especially relaxing alternative to driving, since you can avoid Jim Thorpe’s often-busy traffic and hectic parking situation. Guests can walk 10 minutes to the train station or drive & park in downtown Tamaqua.
The Tamaqua-to-Jim Thorpe excursion runs seasonally, generally on many weekends from February through December, including popular fall-foliage weekends, and tickets can sell out well in advance. Travelers can also inquire at the Jim Thorpe ticket booth about discounted tickets for the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway.
For the regular-season excursion, the train departs Tamaqua Station once daily on Saturdays and Sundays at 10:10 a.m. and arrives in Jim Thorpe at approximately 11:00 a.m. Guests then have several hours to explore the town’s shops, restaurants, museums, and scenic streets before boarding the return train in Jim Thorpe at 4:15 p.m. The train arrives back in Tamaqua at approximately 4:57 p.m. Boarding is available at Tamaqua Station, and tickets are $24 per person for the round trip. Tickets are only sold online, there is no ticket booth at Tamaqua Station. Arrive at least 30 minutes early to allow time for parking, ticketing, and boarding.
